FPGA & HDL — question 10 of 10

Write a real answer. It is graded against the question's rubric, and the mastery movement is computed by the same engine the product uses. Scoring here is deterministic rather than model-written, so this page costs nothing to run and nothing is saved. In a track built from your own posting, the same rubric is graded by the model, which is what produces feedback about your reasoning rather than about coverage.

Your 32-bit multiply-accumulate chain is the critical path, failing timing by 1.5 ns at your target frequency. You're considering inserting a pipeline register in the middle of the multiplier to break the path in half. The problem: the FSM that issues operands to this block currently assumes the result is valid on the very next clock cycle, and that same FSM also handles bus arbitration for other requesters in a tight state sequence. Walk through the tradeoffs of adding this pipeline stage and what you'd actually have to change to make it correct.

How sure are you?

Being confidently wrong costs more mastery than admitting a guess — that is deliberate, and it is how misconceptions get found.

Neither is graded, and nothing here is recorded.
